University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: UB-s16. This is the central part of a large, panoramic photograph dated 28 August 1937. The photograph of battleships moored in the Huangpu River, Shanghai, was taken by an, as yet unidentified, photographer from the Union Building, No.3 the Bund (formerly no.4), looking across the river towards Pudong. The cupolas of the Shanghai Club, the First World War memorial, and the Gutzlaff Tower can be seen on the right. The photograph was previously framed, with a descriptive panel below the photographic print. The picture was owned by William Allison Palmer Sr. (1918-1994), who served in the U.S. Navy from 1935 until he retired in October 1955.
