University of Bristol - Historical Photographs of China reference number: Wr-s102. Photograph taken at the Temple of the City Gods, in the courtyard between the front gate and the main hall. The only legible character on the sign on the left hand side of the entrance, behind the man, is 知 zhi (meaning, to know). The larger sign on the right hand side of the entrance reads: 做箇好人心正身安 [...], zuo ge hao ren xin zhengshen an […] (possibly meaning, be a good person). The smaller sign on the right hand side of the entrance reads: 篆捐修葺 zhuan juan xiu qi (likely meaning: seal donations and repairs). The vertical inscriptions on both sides of the hall’s entrance are, in full, apparently: 做个好人心正身安魂梦稳 and 行些善事天知地鉴鬼神钦. See Wr-s101 (same blind beggar outside temple).
