Pickens Jr., Rev Claude Collection
The photographs of Muslim West China in the 1920s-1930s, in the Rev. Claude L. Pickens, Jr. Collection, are part of a large collection built up by Pickens (1900-1985) and his wife, Elizabeth Zwemer Pickens, held in the Harvard-Yenching Library. The couple were missionaries working with the China Inland Mission and they had an interest in Hui (Han Chinese Muslims). In 1933 and in 1936, Claude and Elizabeth Pickens, and other missionaries, undertook surveys of Hui, Tibetan and other groups in Western China. A total of 1,079 photographs are online here.
